Dinner Party
The secret to an epic Mexican fiesta lies in the details: fresh ingredients, a stress-free Mexican dinner party menu strategy with make ahead dishes, batch cocktails, and setting the scene to feel effortless. Here is your blueprint for hosting the ultimate Mexican dinner party or jump straight to the recipes.
Bebidas: the Art of the Batch Cocktail
When hosting a Mexican dinner party, the bebidas (drinks) menu is just as important as the food. Mexican cuisine often features heat (spice), fat (cheese, meats), and acid (lime), so the drinks are designed to balance those strong flavours. To make it stress-free, you do not want to be stuck behind a shaker all night making individual drinks. Our solution is to batch ahead the drinks about an hour before the dinner party kicks off.
We recommend making a batch (or two or three!) of Chipotle Margaritas. Our recipe. has a touch of smoky Gran Luchito Chipotle Paste balanced with zesty orange and lime, it’s certainly one special Mexican cocktail. Palomas with tequila and refreshing grapefruit are another firm favourite for hosting. We recommend having a selection of Mexican beer, here at Gran Luchito we are big fans of Modelo Especial.
It’s always a good idea to offer a non-alcoholic drink, our recommendation is to make some Aguas Frescas.
Starters to kick things off!
In Mexico starters are called botanas and they set the mood for the entire night. Botanas are the unsung heroes of a Mexican dinner party because they serve as the perfect culinary icebreaker, instantly setting a relaxed and communal tone for the evening. Unlike formal plated starters, botanas are inherently tactile and casual, think digging into a shared molcajete of guacamole with tortilla chips. This grazing style encourages guests to linger around the table, chatting and passing bowls while the main course finishes cooking. Be sure to check out our Mexican Starters collection for more recipe ideas.
The smartest move you can make as a host is to embrace the casual Taco Bar. With a few different fillings ,some prepared ahead, you can easily cater to the gluten-free friend with corn tortillas, the vegetarian with beans and grilled veg fillings, the dairy-free guest, and the carnivore—all without you cooking four separate meals. Here are a few of our favourites, but we have lots more taco recipes.
The best thing about a taco bar is that it turns dinner into something actually fun. You can ditch the stiff, formal vibe for something hands-on where everyone gets to build their own food. There’s something so satisfying about stacking your taco exactly how you want it—piling on the meat, choosing the right salsa, and getting that lime squeeze just right. Plus, it completely removes the stress of feeding picky eaters. Since everyone serves themselves, they get exactly what they like, and the whole atmosphere stays buzzy and relaxed.
Mexican sides are perfect for adding balance and texture to the meal. It’s also a great idea to have some salsas on the table too from smoky Chipotle Salsa to mild and tangy Tomatillo Salsa and Salsa Macha for a hit of heat. Here are a few of our favourite side dishes for a taco fiesta, but be sure to check out our full collection of Mexican Sides.
With either a formal sit-down dinner party or casual buffet, there’s quite a lot of delicious food, but just in case anyone has saved room for pudding, we have a few ideas to end the meal on a sweet note!
A few of our favourite Mexican puddings to end the fiesta on a sweet note from our friends at Delish are:
Homemade Churros – fried dough coated in cinnamon and sugar,r served with a chocolate dip
Flan – a baked custard with indulgent caramel sauce
Dulce de Leche – epic caramel made with sweetened condensed milk
Setting the Scene
When people think of Mexican party decor, their minds often go straight to oversized sombreros and neon maracas. Our vibe is much more authentic!
Lighting is Key Avoid harsh overhead lights. String up fairy lights across your dining area or use an abundance of unscented votive candles. The goal is to make the room feel like a courtyard in Oaxaca at dusk.
Textiles and Florals Use a bright, woven runner (often called a serape) on the table, but balance it with neutral ceramic plates to keep the look modern. For the centerpiece, buy a few bunches of bright marigolds or dahlias for pops of colour.
The Playlist You cannot have a fiesta without music. Create a playlist that mixes classic Mariachi or Bolero (like Luis Miguel or Vicente Fernández) with modern Latin pop or indie rock (like Natalia Lafourcade). Keep the volume low enough for conversation but loud enough to fill the silences.
Timeline:
The Day Before: Slow cook the Barbacoa which will allow the flavours to meld.
Morning Of: Prep your cold toppings, we love chopped onion and coriander. Make the Guacamole, make sure to press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning.
One Hour Before: Batch the bebidas. Set the table. Put the playlist on.
Arrival: Light the candles, put out the chips and salsa, and pour yourself a drink.

Dinner is quite a bit different in Mexico where you will find it is a much smaller meal of leftovers wrapped in tortillas. Lunch is typically the bigger meal of the day in Mexico.
What's the best way to feed a crowd at a Mexican dinner party?
We think large roasting joints that can be slow cooked are not only easiest and economical but also delicious and special. Place the tender slow cooked meat on a platter and serve with warm tortillas, sides of rice and beans and some taco garnishes.
