How to prepare avocados for Mexican dishes

We often get asked about how to tell if an avocado is ripe and, if it is, how you go about cutting one.

You can tell an avocado is ripe by gently squeezing it. A ripe one won’t feel hard, nor should it feel overly mushy. It should gently give as you press on it.

There are 3 techniques we recommend for cutting an avocado nicely. The first technique is to cut the avocado down the middle lengthwise, twist to open it, remove the seed, score and then remove the scored flesh with a spoon.

You can also scoop the flesh out before scoring and cut it on a chopping board into slices. Alternatively, you can cut quarters from a whole avocado.

Is guacamole Mexican?

Guacamole was first developed in Mexico. It has since become part of international and American cuisine as a dip.

How to make guacamole?

In a nutshell, you peel and mash avocados into a bowl. You then stir in onion, garlic, coriander, lime juice, salt and pepper. At Gran Luchito we like to add a few dollops of our Tomatillo Salsa, which takes it to the next level!

How to eat avocado for breakfast?

There are many ways to incorporate avocados into breakfast. For instance, you could serve avocado halves with grilled bacon, or have it sliced alongside scrambled eggs. Another popular breakfast dish is to mash the avocado and have it spread on toast with some Chipotle Mayo. Alternatively, add the mashed or sliced avocado into a breakfast burrito.

How to keep avocado fresh after it's cut?

Brush your cut avocado with lemon juice (or squeeze some right on), wrap it up tightly in plastic wrap, then store it in the refrigerator.

Are avocados healthy for weight loss?

Avocados are high in fibre, which promotes weight loss and metabolic health. High fibre foods help to reduce appetite, rev your metabolism and are keto-friendly.

How to cut an avocado?

Choose a ripe avocado and place it on a cutting board. Using a sharp chef's knife, slice through the avocado lengthwise until you feel the knife hit the pit. Run the knife around the circumference of the fruit, turning the avocado as you go. Cut all the way around. If the avocado doesn't fall into two halves, it is still anchored together by its pit. To open it, hold one half of the avocado in each hand and gently twist, and then it should come apart.
