Starving after a night of salsa dancing, wanting to wash away that extra mezcal you might not have needed last night or just wanting to eat as many meals as possible whilst in Mexico…? Fret not, there is a breakfast option for everyone… Here we’ve got Gran Luchito’s epic list that’ll cater to those looking for fresh fruity delights as well as proper fill-your-belly-to-the-brim options…Time to tuck in!

1. Fonda Margarita

Now this is a proper institution. It opens as the sun is rising to feed workers on their way to work and they sell out of everything by midday! Be prepared to squish onto communal tables and offer a “Provecho!” to those already munching (the Spanish equivalent of “Bon Appetit”!). A live band sits strumming melodies in the corner whilst Margarita’s extended family whisk around you serving up steaming breakfasts to fuel you for a day of exploring. Not in the least elegant, but the scrambled eggs mixed with refried beans are salty, buttery heaven when piled into a fresh tortilla. Anthony Bourdain said it was his favourite breakfast in Mexico – I’d say it would be wise to follow the advice of a man who ate for a living!

2. Cafe Trucha

Just off the leafy plaza of Rio de Janiero in Roma Norte, this gorgeous spot surrounded by greenery serves up top quality breakfasts made with organic veg & eggs from a local farm. Their breakfast baguettes are loaded with fresh ingredients – ask for some salsa macha on the side if you want an added kick… their granola & yoghurt option comes with seasonal home-made compote and, if you have room, their cakes, cookies and scones are melt-in-your-mouth good. You could spend hours here people-watching in the gorgeous dappled light.

3. Casa del Toño

The service is fast, the portions are big & everyone is here; from those who have had one too many mezcals the night before to abuelas having a morning gossip over hot coffee! Definitely order Chilaquiles – a staple for weekend breakfasts: freshly fried tortillas crisps doused in either salsa verde or roja – then add your toppings of fried eggs, chicken or cheese to fill the belly! There’s loads of these dotted around the city, so pick the one closest to you and be prepared to loosen your belt by the end…

4. Amanda Manda

Delectable Mexican flavours served up on beautifully hand-painted plates from Oaxaca surrounded by local art adorning the walls – You feel you have entered someone’s (very tastefully designed) home when you come here for brunch. Start with a pastry filled with tropical fruit jams, move onto their famous eggs with mole. Mole is a sauce made from sometimes over 25 ingredients, ground down in a Mexican pestle & mortar (known as a molcajete), & bubbled away for hours and hours until silky, rich and deeply spiced. A whole lot of love goes into it and you can tell – every family has their secret recipe.

5. Barbacoa Diaz

Barbacoa stands around the city – If you want the most authentic weekend breakfast experience, then look no further than the street corners… Arriving early, the cooks (often whole families) set up stands with red & white striped tents, long tables and plastic stools ready to feed the limb-weary locals after a night of salsa. Barbacoa is lamb slow-cooked overnight, wrapped in maguey leaves and steamed in an underground oven. This makes the meat so tender & moist that once you have had just one bite of this in a fresh corn tortilla, you’ll be sure to be asking for “otro más porfa” (one more please!)… Barbacoa Diaz in Roma Sur on the corner of Calle Manzanillo & Campeche is a firm favourite.
