Although inspired by Mexican cuisine, Mexican tortilla chips are not a Mexican staple as we know it. The triangle-shaped snack was popularized in the 1940s by Rebecca Webb Carranza, owner of El Zarape Tortilla Factory in Los Angeles. She decided to repurpose the rejected tortillas from her automated manufacturing line as a way to reduce food waste. She cut the rejects into small triangles, fried them, packaged them afresh and introduced them to the world as tortilla chips, a globally loved delight that is now enjoyed in numerous forms.
No. Nachos are a prepared dish served as a side-dish or appetizer while tortilla chips are the prime ingredient in nachos. In other words, when tortilla chips are served with toppings and seasoning, they become nachos. Toppings can range from cream, cheese and hot sauce to meat and refried beans. Lightly salted tortilla chips can also be served with salsa and guacamole as a dip.
No. Gran Luchito tortilla chips are made with whole corn and are suitable for vegans. We use the ancient Mexican process called nixtamalization in which the corn is treated with lime, cooked, dried and then, ground before it can be used as flour to make the chips. We only use the stone-grinding process to ensure a great tasting flavor in the chips. Our tortilla chips are also free of dairy, gluten and sugar.
Yes. Luchito tortilla chips contain 15 fewer calories per serving than regular potato chips. Also, they have a less saturated fat than potato chips. However, the way you eat the chips can also make a difference to how healthy they might be. Eating them with healthy, homemade dips or salsa could be a good idea rather than consuming them with oodles of fat and cheese too frequently.
Our tortilla chips are made in the EU.
