As a result, there’s been a huge increase in restaurants opening their doors. The old historic rstaurants have kept pace by refining their service and dishes. 1. Mama Mia

First on our list of where to eat in San Miguel de Allende is an iconic restaurant. Mama Mia first opened its doors more than 35 years ago as a small, simple restaurant with a choice of Mediterranean, Italian and Mexican dishes and offering live music to entertain their guests. They are still thriving and continue to offer great entertainment appreciated by visitors and locals alike who want to have a fun night out and eat great food. It’s perfect both for family dinners or anyone who loves nightlife. The rooftop terrace bar lounge is the most popular part of the restaurant, especially at sunset.

Open for lunch, brunch and dinner. It also caters well for vegetarians and vegans.

2. El Pato Barbacoa Y Mixiotes

A far cry from some of the fining dining you will find in San Miguel de Allende. El Pato Barbacoa is the place to go if you are looking for authentic Mexican cuisine with no frills. With plastic tables and chairs in a sort of barn, it’s hardly pretentious. The service, though, is very familiar, and the food is top notch which makes people want to go back.

3. Inside Cafe

Next on our list of where to eat is one of the best kept secrets in town. Inside Cafe can be quite hard to find but look for this tiny colourful door in the artsy historical centre of San Miguel. After you climb the steep short stairs, you will reach a beautiful terrace with spectacular views over the city and the iconic Parroquia. The ambiance is very friendly and service great. Dishes include healthy options, vegan and vegetarian and they have a great coffee menu as well.

4. Cafe Oso Azul

In the heart of the popular street Calzada de la Virgen you will find Cafe Oso Azul. It is a very simple, cosy and unpretentious restaurant. Especially popular for breakfast but it is open all day long until 10pm.

5. Hecho En Mexico

Next on our list is Hecho En Mexico. Located in a picturesque colonial patio on one of the most frequented streets Cañada de la Virgen. This quaint and cosy restaurant offers a variety of dishes from Mexican cuisine to international and veggie friendly cuisine to satisfy every palate.

6. KI’Bok Coffee
